Who is AAPPR?

The Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment (AAPPR) is the leading voice in the physician and provider recruitment continuum. The Association offers its members and the industry thought-leadership on all topics related to healthcare recruitment, onboarding, and retention. For the past 29 years, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) has been the leader in Physician and Provider Recruitment. Starting out as a small association they quickly grew to over 400 members in 8 years. Today, rebranded as AAPPR, they boast close to 2,000 members redefining recruitment to retention.

Our Mission

At AAPPR, our mission is to impact health care access through education, research, and the elevation of the physician and provider recruitment industry. We empower industry experts through education, research, and engagement.

    • 1990 - 1999

      1990

      • – In the Spring 1990, at a USAFP meeting, a group of in-house Physician Recruiters decide to form a professional association

      1991

      • – In September 1991, the group hosts an annual meeting while at an AAFP meeting and Jerry Hess is elected President by a show of hands

      1992

      • – On October 14, 1992, the Association for Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) was founded and incorporated as a nonprofit organization

      1994

      • – First Annual Educational Forum in Kansas City, MO with 101 attendees and 12 exhibitors

      1995

      • – First published educational magazine, the Journal of ASPR (JASPR)
    • 2000 - 2009

      2000

      • – Launched Mentor program

      2001

      • – Launched the start of its certification series, “Fellowship 101”

      2005

      • – Hired its first Executive Director

      2006

      • – Expanded its certification program to include “Fellowship 201”

      2007

      • – Formed the Academic In-House Recruiters (AIR) shared interest group

      2009

      • – Collaborated with Medical Association Management Association (MGMA) on the Inaugural Physician Recruiter Benchmarking Survey after partnering with them in 2007 to help with the Physician Placement Starting Salary Survey. This partnership led to the eventual creation of the association’s annual benchmarking survey
      • – Expanded its certification program to include “Fellowship 301”
    • 2010 - 2019

      2010

      • – Certified 79 members as Fellows (FASPRs) at the annual conference for those who passed all Fellowship 101, 201 and 301 exams
      • – Launched the association’s Benchmarking for Physician Searches survey and report

      2013

      • – Formed the Onboarding and Retention shared interest group

      2019

      • – Changed its name to the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment (AAPPR). The association’s publication is renamed “ROAR,” standing for Recruit, Onboard, and Retain
    • 2020 - Present

      2020

      • – Elevated the association’s certification program into one comprehensive course and a single exam based on a new competency model. The credential’s name changed from FASPR to the Certified Physician/Provider Recruitment Professional (CPRP)

      2021

      2023

      2024

      • – Seven regional chapters (Illinois, Mid-Atlantic, Michigan, Northeast, Northwest, Southwest, and Texas) merge with AAPPR to become Shared Interest Groups
